Root Canal Therapy
What is a Root Canal?
Root canal therapy, or endodontic treatment, is necessary when the innermost layer of the tooth becomes inflamed or infected. This layer is known as the pulp of the tooth and this layer provides nutrients to the tooth and protects the tooth from potential damage. Inflammation or infection of the pulp can be caused by a variety of issues such as deep decay, or large chips or cracks in the tooth.A root canal is performed when infected pulp and nerve in the root of the tooth is removed. After the infection is removed, the area is shaped and the inside of the root canal is cleaned and the remaining space is sealed. Following the root canal, a crown may be placed on the tooth to protect and restore it to its original function.
How Did My Tooth Get Infected?
The most common causes of infection in the pulp is deep cavities and fractured or broken teeth which expose the pulp to bacteria in the saliva. Constant exposure of bacteria can eventually kill the pulp. Without treatment, the pus from the infection can gather down at the root tip and pass into the jaw bone, causing an abscess, or pus pocket. The resulting pressure from the abscess can cause excruciating pain and discomfort. If left untreated, the abscess can cause further damage leading to bone loss and eventual failure of the tooth, resulting in extraction or otherwise loss of the tooth.Signs & Symptoms
